Probably not many of you have heard about this amazing woman. This lady was a true hero because she rescued 2,500 infants during World War ll.
We all know how dangerous it was to live in Poland as a Jew during that war. In 1942, almost 500,000 Polish Jews were herded into a Ghetto.
Ghetto was one of the most horrific places and people were sent there to die, nothing else, so many of them died due to starvation and diseases.
Irena Sendler worked as a senior administrator in the Warsaw Social Welfare Department. That department was in charge of soup kitchens located in every part of Warsaw. Because her heart was so big, she decided to start helping the Jews.
Later in 1942 she decided to join an underground movement called Zegota, where she got a new name Jolanta. She wore the Star of David and she would try to smuggle in food, clothes and medicine.
Irena realized that was a short-term help, and that she needed to do something bigger and more important so she organized a group of people and they formulated plans to smuggle out as many children as they can from the Ghetto.
They put children in potatoes sacks, coffins and boxes. Her operations were so successful that she managed to save 2,500 children. Unfortunately in 1943 she was discovered by Gestapo and eleven soldiers tore her house apart, but fortunately they didn’t find any evidence of the smuggling.
This woman risked her life for those children, she was horribly tortured in the prison, her feet and legs were broken.
She is a true hero, and a great inspiration to people across the universe.
