Son of Sam or David Berkowitz was someone responsible for murdering six people in the year between 1976 and 1977 in New York City. The murders created a panic among the denizens of New York, and for a while, anarchy was let lose.
Berkowitz's career as a murderer began in July 1976 when he shot at a couple of teenagers, Donna Lauria and Jody Valenti. He managed to kill Lauria and injured Valenti.
In October that year, close on the heels of the first murder, Berkowitz shot into a car parked in a parking-lot. The car had a couple in it, and the bullet hit the man in the head. Only a month later, Berkowitz shot at two teenagers returning home. While one of them could not survive the attack, the other had the lower part of her body paralyzed.
Three months, in January 1977, another couple enjoying the night in a car shot at. Berkowitz actually walked to the couple and shot bullets from his .44 caliber gun.
Another two months down the line, in March, Berkowitz had shot his third victim, Virginia Voskerichian. The latter was still a student, and was on her way back home, when she was shot at.
A month later, Berkowitz was successful in killing another couple in their own car. One of them died, while the other was blinded in one eye besides suffering from other injuries.
There was a big manhunt on for the murderer following each murder. It led to Berkowitz's arrest in August 1977, barely 11 days since he committed his last murder. He can be found in Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, New York where he is serving six life sentences that amount to 365 years in jail.
