Jacques Mesrine was acclaimed as the numero uno public enemy of his times. He had a host of murders and kidnappings to his credit. Mesrine probably holds the record for robbing the most number of banks in history than anyone else. All his robberies were perfectly planned and executed without leaving any space for an error. This added to the headache of officials who couldn't find a jail that could hold him. He managed to escape from all that he was put in. He was also instrumental in kidnapping billionaires for ransom.
Hollywood roped in his popularity and made some movies on him. He did have a weak spot for women. He discovered fun in criminal activity when he found himself attracted to Paris' red light area, Pigalle. But it was in 1962 that he went to jail for the first time on charges of robbery. His obsession with money and women sent him to jail again in December 1965, and many times after that.
Despite the bad name he earned, Mesrine did a lot of charity work , and he donated quite a lot of the money he made from his extortion bids to the poor and the needy. People called him 'Robin Hood of the Paris Streets'.
He was also a mater of disguise. He had the uncanny ability to shave off the hair on his head and face, and assume an entirely new face. He was fond of wearing fashionable clothes, he used to wear wigs over a bald head and wear dark glasses to disguise himself. So he was also known as 'The Man With a Thousand Faces'.
