The cost cutting has reached at totally different level in Japan. Reportedly ‘Weird Hotel’ based in South western Japan has hired robots to perform tasks of receptionist and luggage handling to the room. Labor costs are increasing in the country and these automated systems are helping hotel to maximize profits. On being asked about the motive behind using robots, Hideo Sawada, executive of the hotel responded that this is not a marketing gimmick but to increase efficiency using state of the art technology. He also runs the amusement park. English-speaking robot at the reception is horrible looking dinosaur.
Japanese speaking robot has female appearances with attractive eyes. The Dinosaur asks customers to push one for check in. They even have to feed other information using touch screen. The hotel will be open to public soon. The management gave a tour to press with all robotic demonstration. In order to create hassle free experience, the hotel has installed face recognition technology so customers won’t have to bother about password or keys. Digital image of the guest’s face would be stored in server after each check in. Hotel manager joked that robots are not that good at finding keys yet.
Big robotic arms used in factories can be seen as handling luggage graciously in the lobby area. The arm will only provide the luggage if customer wants it, the place is being called as robot cloak room. Hotel prices are increasing in Japan and manager wanted to show some innovation by keeping prices down.
