As you all know Berlin Wall was some sort of barrier that divided West Berlin from East Berlin. From almost thirty years (from 1961 until 1989) that wall was there and it presented Iron Curtain.
Luckily in 1989, German authorities from the East part opened that border, and showed a sign of change and freedom. Even though you have probably known this, there are some facts that are not so popular.
A lot of people had escaped by going either under or over this wall. Some statistics say that approximately five thousand people had escaped, and the first one was Conrad Schumann who was a border guard of the East part of Germany. Even though he was only nineteen, he was brave enough to try this
Many people were encouraged by his bravery, so they decided to do the same. Some of them dug something like secret tunnels or even crawled under sewers.
East part of Germany called this wall the “Antifascist Bulwark” and government of the East Germany said that this wall had its purposes and some of them were to keep ideas, spies and fascists from the West part of Germany out.
Leader from East part of Germany Walter Ulbricht said that they had done everything (sealed the crack and closed the holes) they could to stop people from the other part of Germany to come.
In 1990, official demolition of this wall had started. Around forty thousand sections were recycled and later used for building materials. Yet some of them ended up in Main Street Station Casino in Las Vegas and in Vatican.
